Asmat wooden ancestral panel from West Papua, late 20th century, carved from a single piece of wood, 63 cm high by 18 cm wide by 2 cm deep, in excellent condition with provenance Private collection.
Description from the seller
An outstanding and highly expressive wooden ancestral carving from the Asmat region of southwestern New Guinea
This remarkable sculpture features five elongated human figures arranged in an intricate openwork composition, their angular limbs and stylized bodies beautifully interconnected. The dynamic arrangement creates a fascinating interplay of movement, rhythm and open space, demonstrating the extraordinary imagination and carving skills of Asmat artists. The figures represent ancestors, whose continuing spiritual presence plays a central role in traditional Asmat beliefs and ceremonial life. Particularly striking are the characteristic facial features, sharply bent limbs and elegant vertical structure of the composition. Carved from a single piece of wood, the sculpture has developed an attractive natural patina and has been exceptionally well preserved, with only minor traces of age and traditional use. A wonderful and visually powerful example of Asmat sculptural art, rarely encountered in such an elaborate openwork design. An excellent collector’s piece for enthusiasts of authentic New Guinea tribal art and Oceanic sculpture.
