Sailing under the Spanish flag with 4 masts, 14 heavy gun ports and with very detailed rigging for the 9 sails, this scale model is a feast for the eyes.
The galleon dates from the latter half of the 16th century and the 17th century. This type of Spanish ships were used to transport gold and silver from the New World to Spain.
A galleon is a further development of the carrack, and differs from it in that the very tall and curved forecastle, the forecastle, was replaced by a low, narrow bow projecting far forward, behind which rose the vertical front of the hull. This made it easier to install heavy cannons on the bow. Likely maneuverability also increased. The galleon retained a high aftcastle. This aft structure was partly intended as accommodation for the nobles who served as officers aboard the ship, and were often also (partly) owners. The combination of a lower front and a high back gave the characteristic silhouette of the 17th-century sailing ship. Galleons were perhaps developed to answer the galjas from the Mediterranean, a low galley that also carried heavy cannons on the prow.
This scale model is in reasonably good, detailed condition, but is missing some parts, such as the rudder. Additionally, the rigging in a number of places is incomplete and it has incurred some small damages over time, but overall in a very fine and neat condition.
