Description from the seller
This atmospheric pastel by Jaap Lindeijer, bottom left labeled Rotterdam Haven, provides a lively view of the Rotterdam port. In the center lies an imposing cargo ship at the quay, surrounded by cranes, inland ships and other port installations. The warm rust-brown tones of the hull contrast nicely with the blue of the sky and water, while the dark smoke plume emphasizes the industrial character of the port. The reflections in the water and the soft pastel tones simultaneously create an atmospheric look.
Jacob (Jaap) Lindeijer (Rotterdam, 1896–1976) was a Dutch draftsman and etcher who became best known for city, river, and port scenes of Rotterdam and the surrounding area. In addition to his artistry, he worked as a referendar for the City of Rotterdam. As far as is known, Lindeijer was self-taught and worked in a classical, realistic-romantic style. Rotterdam formed an important source of inspiration: ships, the Maas, ports, bridges, and characteristic urban scenes recur frequently in his oeuvre. He produced not only drawings and pastels but also numerous etchings and also worked under the pseudonym A.J. Willebeek. The work is signed with this name.
