Description from the seller
Roman Baroque Chalice in Mercury-Gilt Copper with Silver-Gilt Cup Chased and hammered silver tested by jewellery black stone and chemical test see pics ( see last pic ) No silver mark on
Roma, circa 1700
Not any whasing or restorantion on the golden copper part
The connecting screw of the silver and silver-gilt cup was replaced in modern times.
Rare and important liturgical chalice attributed to Rome or its artistic sphere.
The chalice is composed of a richly decorated mercury-gilt copper mount featuring winged cherub heads, mascarons, scrolling foliage, and high-relief vegetal ornamentation characteristic of early Roman Baroque craftsmanship. The central knop is adorned with finely modelled angel heads and openwork decoration of notable quality.
The upper cup appears to be made of silver-gilt a technique frequently encountered on high-quality liturgical vessels of the period, combining a precious-metal cup with a mercury-gilt copper structure.
A long hand-engraved inscription runs around the foot. The characters appear largely Greek, or influenced by Greek script. This inscription may represent a votive dedication, donor's inscription, or a reference to a Greek community connected with Rome.
