Crusaders Armenia, Bronze “The Sacred Talisman of the Warrior King” — Excellent Hetoum I Medalic Amulet with 60cm Silver Chain (No reserve price)

A magnificent and highly symbolic medallic coin amulet based on the coinage of Hetoum I, one of the most important rulers of the medieval Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia, a kingdom deeply connected with the Crusader states of the eastern Mediterranean. Hetoum I (r. 1226–1270) ruled Cilician Armenia during a remarkable period of diplomacy, warfare and cultural exchange between the Christian Armenian kingdom, the Crusader states and the Mongol Empire. The principal side depicts the crowned king enthroned, holding the symbols of royal authority. The surrounding Armenian inscription gives the piece the unmistakable character of medieval Cilician Armenian coinage. The opposite side displays a bold cross design, surrounded by additional geometric elements and Armenian lettering. The cross was not merely decorative: on the coinage of the Christian Armenian kingdom it served as a powerful declaration of Christian kingship, faith and sovereignty. The large, medal-like format and strong relief make this particularly impressive when worn. Its dark surface with warm bronze highlights beautifully emphasizes the medieval inscriptions, royal figure and central cross. Now fitted with a modern suspension ring and presented with a modern chain, the piece becomes a dramatic wearable historical amulet, while retaining the visual character of the original medieval coin type. Ruler: Hetoum I Kingdom: Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia Reign: AD 1226–1270 Period: Medieval / Crusader Period Object: Medallic coin amulet Material: Bronze / copper alloy Obverse: Crowned royal figure of Hetoum I enthroned, surrounded by Armenian legend Reverse: Prominent Christian cross with surrounding symbols and Armenian inscription Jewellery conversion: Modern suspension ring and chain Condition: Strong medieval-style relief with dark patination and contrasting exposed metal; please examine all photographs for the condition. Cilician Armenia occupied a unique position at the meeting point of Armenian, Byzantine, Crusader and Near Eastern cultures. This gives the piece considerably more historical character than a conventional medieval pendant.
