Candlestick - Patinated bronze - Bugia Nogotico

Fascinating patinated bronze chamber-bugia candlestick (Gothic Revival) featuring the iconic Chimera of Paris and mythological figures.
I am putting up for auction a fascinating and unusual piece: a rare French-made chamber candlestick ("bugia" or bougeoir) dating to the second half of the 19th century (circa 1860–1890, the Napoleon III period), in full bloom of the Eclectic and Gothic Revival tastes.

Artistic and iconographic details:
What makes this piece especially coveted by Wunderkammer collectors is its richely elaborate and whimsical sculptural decoration. On the lobed base, within elegant niches, lies a meticulous reproduction of the famous Chimera of Notre-Dame de Paris, known as the "Le Stryge" (the strige, or contemplative demon), the iconic gargoyle added to the cathedral by architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc during the great 19th‑century restorations.

The eclectic whimsy continues on the volute handle, topped by a delightful winged mythological figure (a young satyr or the god Pan), captured while playing the syrinx (Pan flute). The candle-bearing shaft is decorated with pointed-arch arcades housing medieval-style relief figures in high relief.

Material and technique:
The object is made in solid metal alloy (heavy bronze/brass) using an excellent wax mold casting technique. The assembly, clearly visible on the bottom, is secured by the typical central threaded pin locked by a slotted nut, characteristic of pre-industrial machining of the era.

Condition:
The piece is presented in excellent original antique condition. There are no missing parts, chips, breaks, or post-war welds. The structure is perfectly solid. The splendid patina of time has been deliberately and jealously preserved (the object has not undergone intrusive chemical polishing). The natural chiaroscuro enhances the sculpture’s three-dimensionality and guarantees its historical authenticity.
