Vintage mid-century wall coat rack with hat rack – wood & chrome – ca. 1960s

A particularly stylish vintage wall coat rack from the mid-20th century, executed in a beautiful combination of warm wood and gleaming chrome-plated metal.

The long, rounded wooden backplate has a warm honey-brown wood grain and is framed by a light cream-colored edge. Mounted on it are five substantial chrome coat rack hooks, each with multiple hanging points and characteristic black end caps. At the top is a spacious metal hat and luggage rack, made of chrome-plated tubing with a decorative zigzag motif.

The combination of a wooden back panel, chrome, a top rack and multiple metal garment hooks is characteristic of Dutch and West European wall coat racks from the 1950s–1970s. Comparable pieces are generally placed within Mid-Century Modern / retro design and are usually dated around the 1960s.

Particularly beautiful is the graphic effect of the top rack: the straight chrome tubing is combined with a series of diamond-shaped intersections, which keeps the coat rack, despite its generous size, looking airy. The black buttons on the hooks and at the rack mounting provide a subtle contrast.
