Mid-Century magazine rack from the Netherlands, black metal frame with yellow cords, in good condition with minor signs of aging and small stains, dimensions 36 cm high, 37 cm long, 20 cm deep.
Description from the seller
Vintage mid-century reading rack in black and yellow – Atomic / Scoubidou style – circa the 1950s–1960s
A particularly decorative vintage reading rack from the middle of the 20th century, executed in a bold combination of black lacquered metal and bright yellow plastic cord. The graphic line work, contrasting colors, and playful construction immediately give this rack that characteristic 50s / early 60s look.
The frame is built from slender black-lacquered metal tubes. Between them are long yellow loops that are not only functional but also give the rack its striking rhythmic form. The yellow connections are locally wound around the black frame, creating a decorative hand-tied effect.
The rack is open on both sides and has a generous V shape due to the outward-tilting sides. This allows magazines, newspapers, books, or records to be neatly organized. The four spread-out feet give the whole piece its typical light, almost architectural mid-century appearance.
Comparable black metal reading racks with bright yellow plastic cord are online dated to the 1950s and described as Mid-Century magazine racks. A very similar combination of black metal and yellow scoubidou cord is also found with French modernist reading racks from circa the 1950s.
The combination of thin metal, strong color contrasts, and airy geometric forms aligns well with postwar European modernism and the so-called Atomic Age / Mid-Century Modern idiom. Similar reading racks from this period are also offered as Atomic or Sputnik design.
There are also Dutch Pilastro reading racks from the 1950s in black and yellow metal. Without a maker mark or further documentation, attributing this piece to Pilastro or a specific designer is not warranted; it is therefore offered as an unmarked Mid-Century design.
