AWA - Louis van Teeffelen - Chair (4) - Teak - Rare organic N-shaped Leg

Louis van Teeffelen for AWA (Alink & Wilhelm) – Rare set of 4 organic dining chairs – Netherlands, 1950s/60s A highly unusual and rare set of four dining chairs, designed by Dutch furniture designer Louis van Teeffelen for AWA Meubelfabriek. This set stands out for its distinctly organic and sculptural design. The curved wooden backrests, elegant construction and, above all, the exceptionally slender legs with their characteristic N-shaped side structure give the chairs a remarkably light and dynamic appearance. Within Van Teeffelen’s body of work, this is an exceptional execution. This particular combination of the organically shaped backrest, slender legs and N-shaped construction was designed only once as a matching set of four chairs. The set can therefore be regarded as pièces uniques within his work for AWA. Van Teeffelen was known for his refined organic design language and for incorporating structural elements into the visual character of his furniture. His work for AWA and Wébé is an important example of Dutch Mid-Century Modern design, with a clear affinity to the Scandinavian design tradition. The warm tone of the wood contrasts beautifully with the light upholstered seats. The chairs have a strong sculptural quality from every angle, while the distinctive N-shaped construction is particularly striking when viewed from the side. The set consists of four matching chairs and represents an exceptional collector’s piece for enthusiasts of Dutch design, organic modernism and mid-century furniture. Designer: Louis van Teeffelen Manufacturer: AWA, The Netherlands Number of chairs: 4 Period: circa 1950s–1960s Style: Mid-Century Modern / Organic Modernism Materials: warm-toned hardwood, likely teak, with off-white bouclé upholstery Special feature: rare execution with slender N-shaped side construction Each chair shows visible signs of use and age, consistent with its vintage character. The upholstery was replaced several years ago with a high-quality fabric and was recently deep-cleaned by a professional upholstery cleaning company; it now presents in excellent, near-new condition.
