Description from the seller
Pieter Bas Bouwman — Down the Rabbit Hole
Pieter Bas Bouwman (American-born Dutch artist, b. 1990)
Down the Rabbit Hole
Fine art photography
50 × 75 cm
Framed with Museum Glass
Down the Rabbit Hole was created during Pieter Bas Bouwman’s artist residency in Manaus, Brazil, in the heart of the Amazon region. The work was later exhibited at Haute Photographie in the Netherlands.
The photograph is part of Bouwman’s investigation into the relationship between humanity and the natural world, with a particular focus on the visible and less visible traces of human influence on nature.
In Down the Rabbit Hole, the dense vegetation and its reflection form an almost enclosed, seemingly untouched world. Through the altered colour palette, however, the landscape becomes unfamiliar and slightly unsettling. What initially appears natural gradually reveals itself as an image that has been manipulated by human intervention.
The title Down the Rabbit Hole refers to this shift in perception: an invitation to enter a landscape that appears familiar at first, but becomes increasingly ambiguous the longer one looks.
