Sansui 9090DB – collector’s item – after comprehensive service

The item for auction is a unique Sansui 9090DB stereo receiver, preserved in an exceptionally rare collector’s visual condition.

This is a unit that makes a huge impression from the very first contact. The front panel, scale, indicators, knobs and switches, and the original wooden case are kept in collector’s condition. The device looks as if it has been used for a few months, not for nearly 50 years. It is basically NOS!!

Of particular note is the condition of the original wooden enclosure, which has preserved a beautiful natural wood grain and very good color and gloss. The anodized front and knobs are like new.

Also noteworthy is the preserved factory label next to the Dolby switch. This is another detail underscoring the exceptional degree of preservation and originality of this exemplar.

The amplifier has undergone comprehensive service at the specialist Proton Audio. The scope of work performed is documented in detail in the invoice attachment, and the documentation is linked to this specific unit by its serial number.

As part of the service, the following was done:

• replacement of electrolytics, defective transistors, damaged fuse resistors, double VD1212 diodes, and damaged Zener diodes;

• work on power supply and protection PCBs, tuner power supply, turntable preamplifier, preamplifier, Dolby NR encode/decode, and end-stage drivers;

• use of low-noise OnSemi transistors and Nichicon PW, MUSE ES / FG Fine Gold, and WIMA capacitors;

• re-soldering and cleaning of PCB and repairing connections on the Dolby NR board;

• removal of corrosive adhesive from under the replaced capacitors;

• cleaning of speaker output relays and Dolby/source selectors;

• replacement of paste under transistors in power supplies;

• replacement of 6 bulbs;

• thorough interior cleaning of the unit;

• setting idle currents and 0 V DC;

• calibration of drive indicators;

• calibration of the Dolby NR system.

Special attention was also given to the Dolby NR system. The Dolby board was comprehensively serviced, including repair of connections, replacement of damaged components, and full calibration of the system. It has been prepared for further, long-term operation.

The amplifier comes with the invoice and a detailed attachment documenting the performed service work as well as the removed old parts.

Exemplars of the Sansui 9090DB preserved in this condition appear on the market extremely rarely – one might even say this is an opportunity that happens only once every few years. I am confident that at the time of listing, it would be hard to find another unit of this magnificent amplifier in an equally exceptional state.
