Description from the seller
Origin. Democratic Republic of the Congo
Tribe. Bakongo
Material. Wood
Dimensions. 35 cm
Shipping method. Colissimo, 24–48 hours
This carved wooden Kongo art piece displays powerful, dramatic iconographic features associated with figures of power or ritual justice (nkisi):
Main figure: A standing figure dominates the composition, with an expressive face, wide-open, bulging eyes that appear inlaid or outlined, and a slightly open mouth conveying dramatic or spiritual intensity. Its neck is surrounded by an imposing collar or textured necklace.
Attributes and posture:
In its right hand, the figure firmly holds a vertical weapon or scepter (resembling a club or short blade).
In its raised left hand, it holds a severed head.
Kneeling figure: At its feet, attached to the circular base, a second figure is depicted kneeling or in submission, its body positioned to heighten the scene of domination or ritual sacrifice.
Patina and material: The wood has a dark, aged patina, polished in places, with signs of wear, ritual use, or offerings across the surface, testifying to its traditional use.
