Ciborium in solid silver and vermeil – Martial Dejean – First Empire, circa 1798-1809 - Paris
Resting on a wide circular foot with a knurled edge, this ciborium features an elegant engraved and chased decoration of palmettes, foliage, garlands and vegetal motifs, characteristic of the neoclassical decorative vocabulary of the period. The egg-shaped knop is also adorned with relief foliage.
The large hemispherical bowl, sober and balanced, retains inside a beautiful mercury gilding (vermeil) intended to protect the silver in contact with the Blessed Sacrament.
It is crowned with a domed lid richly engraved with a crown of flowers and foliage, topped by a small cross.
The piece bears several antique hallmarks
The rooster hallmark corresponding to the 1st title of French silverware from 1798-1809
The guarantee mark with a woman’s head.
The master mark, M, star, D, is identified as Martial Dejean's.
