Description from the seller
Superb and authentic large Tramp Art-style box from the first half of the 20th century. This remarkable piece of folk art is characterized by geometrically carved wooden layers made by successive notches (chip carving), creating a striking pyramidal effect.
The underside of the object reveals its original structure: a reclaimed wood box from the famous Dutch cigar manufacturer Hofnar, line "Luxe" (logo with a crown clearly visible).
The side face incorporates an antique chromolithograph depicting a religious devout scene. The interior is fully original and fully lined with green and white checkered cotton fabric (vichy), outlined by a fine dentilated wooden border. Opening is via a long brass piano hinge.
Dimensions: Height 20 cm x Width 36 cm x Depth 20 cm
Condition: Good overall condition for a folk-art object of this period. Beautiful original patina, light wear typical of normal use.
