Document - British India Freemasonry – Mayo Lodge No. 1413 E.C. – Rawal Pindi – Membership Roll & Summons – - 1906

Rare original Masonic document from British India, issued by Lodge “Mayo” No. 1413 E.C. at Rawal Pindi (present-day Rawalpindi, Pakistan) in 1906. The document is an extensive printed Summons, Agenda and Roll of Members for a regular meeting of the lodge, held at the Freemasons’ Hall, Rawal Pindi, on 2 October 1906. The summons itself is dated 25 September 1906. It names the principal officers of the Lodge, including: Wor. Bro. T. Whittaker, W.M. Wor. Bro. H. R. Butcher, I.P.M. F. J. Boga, S.W. Gobind Ram Sethi, J.W. R. W. Sadleir, Secretary Particularly interesting is the extensive Roll of Members of Lodge “Mayo” No. 1413 E.C., corrected to 26 June 1906. The roll contains more than 100 named members, together with their Masonic offices or ranks and dates of joining or initiation. It provides an unusual snapshot of the membership of a British Indian Masonic lodge at the beginning of the 20th century. The membership reflects the diverse character of Freemasonry in colonial India, including both British and Indian members. The document also contains detailed internal information concerning the activities of the Lodge, including: * membership statistics for 1906; * initiations and admissions; * resignations and deaths; * Masonic degrees conferred; * dates of forthcoming Lodge meetings; * administrative matters; * the complete agenda for the October 1906 meeting. The agenda is particularly interesting from a social and military-history perspective. Candidates and prospective members are identified with occupations and military affiliations, including Soldier Sergeants of the 10th Royal Hussars and the Ordnance Department, as well as members connected with the Military Works and Military Grass Farms. The document also records that the Lodge was to go into mourning following the sudden death of Brother T. Bourne. Lodge Mayo No. 1413 E.C. was an established English Constitution Masonic lodge at Rawal Pindi in the Punjab during the British Raj. An evocative primary historical document concerning Freemasonry, British India, the Punjab and the British military presence on the North-West Frontier. Condition Original document, not a reproduction.
