Description from the seller
Vintage Danish Mid-Century Nutcracker – Attributed to Poul Knudsen and also frequently referred to as Preben Brosté - Rosewood & Brass – ca. 1960s
A special piece of Danish Mid-Century design: this elegant vintage nutcracker combines an extremely functional mechanism with the warm look of dark rosewood and attractive brass details.
The nutcracker consists of two long, streamlined wooden arms with an ingenious metal mechanism between them. The serrated jaws provide a secure grip on the nut, while the long arms offer sufficient leverage to crack the shell.
The dark, richly grained wood has the characteristic warm reddish-brown appearance associated with rosewood. The brass-colored mechanism forms a particularly beautiful contrast with it. Thanks to the simple lines and the nearly fully integrated mechanism, the piece has the restrained, functional look that is so typical of Scandinavian Mid-Century design.
Attribution
This type of Danish nutcracker is regularly attributed in international vintage- and design markets to Poul Knudsen and sometimes to Preben Brosté. However, the available sources do not agree on the designer. Because no maker’s mark or signature is currently identified on this piece, this designer attribution is explicitly given as an attribution rather than a fixed fact.
The design and execution are generally placed around the 1960s.
