Medieval, Crusaders Era Bronze “The Cross Within the Cross” — Double-Sided Bronze Devotional Pendant (No reserve price)

A beautiful and highly distinctive Medieval bronze devotional cross, designed to be worn and carrying two different expressions of the Christian Cross on its opposing faces. The pendant has an elegant cruciform silhouette with strongly modelled arms, expanded terminals and a substantial original suspension loop at the top. Its sculptural construction gives the piece an unusually powerful appearance despite its intimate, wearable character. The most fascinating feature appears at the centre of the front: an intentionally engraved X-shaped cross or saltire, enclosed within the central body of the larger pendant. The result is effectively a cross within a cross—the great physical cross of the pendant containing a second sacred sign at its heart. On the reverse, the central decoration changes to a more conventional upright cross (+). Seen together, the two faces create an intriguing devotional composition: X on one side and + on the other, two intersecting forms united within a single Christian pendant. The X-shaped cross is traditionally known as a saltire and became particularly associated in Christian tradition with Saint Andrew, although without further archaeological context the mark on this particular object should not be attributed definitively to the saint. More broadly, both signs belong to the rich vocabulary of medieval Christian cross symbolism. For its medieval owner, such a pendant could have been far more than personal ornament. Worn close to the body, the Cross served as a visible profession of faith, Christ's sacrifice, redemption and hope of divine protection. Its double-sided character is especially evocative: whichever face turned outward while being worn, a sacred cross remained visible. The pronounced suspension loop confirms its practical character as a wearable devotional object, while the rounded and expanded terminals give the pendant a beautifully balanced, almost architectural silhouette. Its surface preserves an attractive deep green patina interspersed with warm bronze and earthy highlights, particularly across the raised portions and engraved central symbols. Age-related wear and irregularities further enhance its individual historical character. Now presented on a modern silver chain, it becomes once again what its form suggests it was intended to be—a wearable expression of medieval Christian devotion. Front: X-shaped cross / saltire Reverse: Upright Christian cross (+) Symbolism: Faith • Christ • Redemption • Protection • Devotion • Salvation
