Rajko Tomić (1905-1988) - Sailing Boat in Harbour

Rajko Tomić (Yugoslav, 1905–1988?) — "Sailing Boat in Harbour", oil on canvas Rajko Tomić (also carried in databases as Tomič and Tomic) was born in 1905 at Lastva, a coastal settlement in the Bay of Kotor in present-day Montenegro and was active as a painter in Yugoslavia; sources give his death as 1988, with some uncertainty. His works include a variety of seascapes and village-life portraits depicting subjects from across the Adriatic region. Sailing Boat in Harbour shows a traditional Adriatic working boat lying becalmed on flat water, its single mast carrying a broad cream mainsail and a smaller headsail in deep red-brown. The green and dark hull is doubled beneath it in long vertical reflections. Behind the boat runs a low pale line reading as a harbour mole or sea wall, and above it banked cumulus rises against the blue. The sails and clouds are laid in with the knife in thick, decisive strokes that stand proud of the surface, set against the thinner brushed handling of the water. Oil on canvas (brush/knife), on the original stretcher. Canvas size 43 × 29 cm. Framed 46 × 31.5 cm. Good condition with light rubbing on the frame and light spotting on the back of canvas. Signed at lower right in ochre oil, "R. Tomić". Undated, estimated as approx. 1950-1960. The stretcher bars carry the stamp "KONDOR" and are marked with the format numbers 29 and 43; an old inventory or exhibition number, 283, is written on one bar in blue crayon. The piece comes from a private collection in Vienna. Shipped framed, on its original stretcher.
