Description from the seller
This historic document is a Letter of Exchange (Letra de Cambio) transatlantic issued in Cuba in 1909, printed by the famous American Bank Note Company of New York, a world-leading company in the production of banknotes and security documents.
It is an exceptional piece for enthusiasts of economic history, philately, and colonial/Caribbean collectibles.
# Detailed Description of the Front (Recto)
* Issuing Institution: Banco Español de la Isla de Cuba. This detail is historically significant: the bank retained its original denomination tied to the Spanish colonial past even after Cuba's independence (formally achieved in 1902).
* Place and Date of Issue: Prepared in Habana (Havana) on July 9, 1909 (9 de Julio de 1909).
* Amount: At the top right the value is indicated as 1,469.20 Pesetas. In the handwritten text it is specified in words: "Un mil cuatrocientos sesenta y nueve 20/100 pesetas".
* Beneficiary and Terms: It is a "Primera de Cambio" (First exchange) ordering payment "A ocho días vista" (eight days from presentation) to the order of Mr. Faustino Diaz. The money is sent on behalf of Mr. Silverio Diaz.
* Bank of Support in Europe: In case of necessity, the document instructs to contact the "Sres. Garcia Calamarte y C.ª Madrid", a famous Spanish banking house of the era. The blue stamp applied above confirms routing to Madrid.
* Graphic Security Features: The left shoulder and the bottom of the inscriptions feature a richly geometric anti-counterfeiting guilloché pattern typical of New York printworks, with micro-scripts repeated inside the decorations. The left edge is milled, testifying to the separation of the matrix from the master plate.
# Description of the Back (Verso)
The back shows the closing of the financial transaction once it arrived at its destination in Spain:
* Payment Receipt: The autograph inscription "Pravia 12 de Ago[s]to 1909" (Pravia, a locality in Asturias, Spain, on August 12, 1909) is present.
* Signature: Under the wording "Recibí" (Received), the beneficiary F. Diaz’s signature appears, certifying the receipt of the money about a month after issue in Havana. A watermark-like official stamp of the bank is also visible.
1. The excellence of the printshop: Titles and documents produced by the American Bank Note Co. New York are the most sought after internationally for the extraordinary quality of the steel engravings.
2. The Cuba-Spain connection: Financial documents that attest the flow of money between Cuba and Spain in the very early years of the Cuban Republic (post-Spanish dominion) enjoy a very active bilateral collector market in both the Caribbean/USA and Spain.
3. Condition: Excellent. No tears or paper gaps; the central fold is intact and the inks (both black and blue from the stamp) are vivid and not faded.
