Meissen porcelain figure 'Winter' after a model by Johann Joachim Kändler, depicting an elderly man with a fur mantle and a hearth, height about 20.5 cm, width 10 cm, depth 7 cm, in excellent condition with minimal signs of aging.
Description from the seller
From Europe’s pinnacle of porcelain art, Meissen in Germany, we proudly present the ‘Winter’ by the master Johann Joachim Kändler (Johann Joachim Kändler, 1706–1775) based on his prototype.
This work is one of the allegorical representations of the four seasons expressed through a figure, a classical Meissen figurine.
Winter is symbolized by a dignified elderly man with a long beard.
He is wrapped in a richly fur-trimmed mantle to ward off the cold, and beside him sits a brazier to keep him warm. Not only the blazing flames, but even the spiraling smoke that rises above them are rendered in three-dimensional porcelain—a superb achievement unique to Meissen sculpture.
The deep ruby cloak, the soft fur texture, the lines of the man’s muscles and bones, and the hair and beard flowing in strands are all exquisitely painted on the white porcelain skin.
Furthermore, at the feet there is Rococo ornamentation lavishly accented with gold, and the brazier is treated with a pale pink and gold.
From the calm expression of the figure to the dynamism of the flames, this piece elevates the abstract season “Winter” into a single porcelain sculpture, a quintessential expression of Kändler’s allegorical style.
What is particularly notable about this piece is its condition.
Even in an old figure, the fingertips and toes are among the most vulnerable parts, but here the delicate flames rising from the brazier and even the highly susceptible, spiraling smoke are well preserved.
Only top-quality old Meissen can offer this level of elegance, paired with Kändler’s superb modeling.
This is a masterpiece to be cherished as a centerpiece in a showcase for generations to come.
Size
Approx. height 20.5 cm × width 10 cm × depth 7 cm
Condition
Excellent condition overall.
As with an antique, there may be minor age-related scratches or soiling, but there are no notable large damages, and the piece is, on the whole, in very good condition.
