Confining himself in Normandy, David Hockney observed the passage of the seasons and used his iPad to spontaneously transcribe the impressions the surrounding landscape inspired in him. This project became a lifeline for him and, for us, a message of hope. For this book, David Hockney compiled 220 paintings from 2020 (and four as a bonus), laid on blue paper. The album is accompanied by a booklet containing facsimiles of two sketchbooks prepared for the project.
A Year in Normandy with David Hockney /
The seasons unfold in an artist’s book composed of iPad paintings. From his quaint farmhouse lost among the rich meadows of Normandy, David Hockney observed the passage of the seasons in 2020, up to the early hours of the new year. He used his iPad to capture with greater spontaneity the changing beauty of the surrounding landscape—the first spring buds, the scents of summer, the saturated colors of autumn, and the bare silhouettes of the dark branches in winter. The 220 paintings (and four in bonus) in this collection have been reproduced with up to seven special colors to best serve the artist’s vision, then laid on dark blue paper. A brief introduction by Hockney explains how this project, conceived before the pandemic, became a lifeline during confinement, through which he spread a message of hope: “Remember that they cannot cancel spring!”
The collection is accompanied by an additional booklet of ink drawings and watercolors: the complete facsimiles of two 2019 sketchbooks, which begin near the artist’s property in Los Angeles and accompany him on his Norman travels. The two volumes are presented in a luxury case, with a painting of an iPad depicting a magical view of his house and garden printed on the back of the clamshell.

About the artist /
David Hockney (1937–2026) was an English painter, draftsman, printmaker, designer, and photographer. He emerged in the early 1960s at the height of British pop, then moved to Los Angeles in 1964, where he painted notably his famous pool series. In addition to traditional genres of portraiture and landscape, he continually evolved his art, employing unexpected techniques such as Polaroid, photocopy and fax, digital video, or using the iPhone and iPad as painting tools. Since his first major retrospective exhibition, which toured Europe in 1970 from London’s Whitechapel Gallery, he has been one of the most exhibited and popular artists of contemporary art.
