Description from the seller
Beautiful antique sewing or tabletop vanity box from the late 19th to early 20th century (circa 1900), of Central European manufacture (likely France or Germany), notable for housing pieces of high Spanish Toledo craftsmanship. An ideal piece for collectors of textile memorabilia, antique sewing, and display items.
Details of the Box and Structure:
• Exterior: Wooden box covered in black leather with a debossed finish. The top lid is exquisitely decorated with a central lithographed panel depicting a couple in 18th-century court attire, framed by fine Art Nouveau-style scroll borders. It retains its integrated wooden legs and the original metal latch of the lock, functional but without a key.
• Interior: Luxurious lining in cream-colored silk or satin with quilted (buttoned) padding, designed to hold needles and pins. The inner back panel includes a beveled rectangular mirror framed in gathered fabric.
Tools and Jewelry of the Set:
The sewing kit includes a mixed assemblage of sewing and manicure tools from the period:
1. Sewing Scissors Model "Stork" (Toledo): A spectacular collectible piece in forged steel. The blades feature delicate, extensive acid-etched Renaissance motifs, bearing the inscription "TOLEDO" near the pivot. The handles mimic the silhouette of a bird.
2. Toledo Damascened Thimble: Original piece made using the traditional inlay technique (gold threads 24k hammered into a blackened steel base). It features a lower band decorated with arabesque scrolls.
3. Minor tools for various functions in bone and small scissors.
Condition:
Very good vintage/antique condition. The exterior shows natural wear and minimal patina on the corners, fully in keeping with its age. The interior has no tears. The steel scissors blades are clean, functional, and without nicks.
• Approximate measurements: 23 x 16 x 10 cm
