Royal KHM - Typewriter - 1938

Royal KHM typewriter from 1938 – characterful office history with Dutch importer mention

A machine with presence, heft and a story. This Royal KHM brings the atmosphere of the pre-war office to life: round keys with metal rims, a black casing and a visible mechanism in which each letter is literally moved into place. A beautiful contrast to our digital world.

The serial number KHM92-2192458 dates this typewriter to 1938 according to available serial-number data. The model designation KHM refers to Royals H-model with a tabulator adjustable via keys: the 'K' stands for 'Key Set'.

Royal was an American manufacturer from Hartford, Connecticut. The KHM belongs to a documented chapter in the history of the mechanical typewriter.

This exemplar also has an appealing Dutch connection. The visible inscriptions mention Blikman & Sartorius, with Amsterdam, Arnhem and Rotterdam, and a separate importers medallion. A nice detail that makes this Royal even more interesting for collectors of historical office equipment.
