Description from the seller

Attention: due to customs regulations we can only ship inside the European Union. Please ensure you have a valid EU shipping address before placing a bid.

Ancient Roman silver alloy medical or cosmetic tool with a circular bowl, set at an angle on a short stem. The handle tapers slightly before widening into a flattened decorated terminal.

-> The Romans used such dual-purpose instruments in a medical, cosmetic, or apothecary context, for example for applying, removing, stirring, or preparing medicaments, cosmetics, powders, herbs, or ointments.

Length: ± 12 cm
Condition: good solid condition. Signs of wear consistent with age and use.

Certificate of Authenticity: available upon request (pdf-format).

-> The incised decoration on the handle adds a personal and decorative element to the object. Roman silver utensils were often carefully finished, even when intended for everyday use, showing the importance of presentation and table culture in Roman life.

Catawiki disclaimer:
This object has been carefully examined for its material and surface characteristics.

Laboratory analysis (e.g. XRF) is not routinely undertaken in private collecting, and destructive testing is avoided as it causes permanent damage to archaeological material.

Before modern hallmarking, gold and silver alloys varied depending on local resources, recycling practices and economic conditions.
