Description from the seller
An iconic Chinese blue-and-white porcelain incense burner from the late Ming dynasty, circa 1600–1644.
The incense burner has a beautifully globular body on three curved legs, a wide flaring rim and two raised ears on either side. The decoration is rendered in cobalt blue under the glaze on a light porcelain ground.
The body is adorned all around with stylized floral motifs, elegant lotus flowers and tendrils. The neck is decorated with a decorative geometric band, while the rim and the base are accented by fine blue lines. The combination of the round form, the three legs and the raised ears gives the object a distinctly sculptural character.
Incense burners of this type were used in China for religious rituals, ancestor worship and indoors. In addition to their functional use, they were valued as decorative objects and collectibles.
