Description from the seller
Buddha inspired by the Sukhothai style of the 15th century
Thailand
20th century
Bronze
Dimensions: 20 × 13 × 7 cm
Elegant representation of the Buddha in bronze, made in the 20th century in the classical style of the Sukhothai school, whose artistic apex lies in the 14th and 15th centuries.
The Buddha is depicted seated in meditation, legs crossed resting on a simple pedestal of a slightly trapezoidal shape with rounded corners. His right hand descends onto the knee, the fingers directed toward the earth, performing the gesture symbolizing the taking of the earth witness at the moment of Enlightenment. The silhouette features the stylistic characteristics emblematic of Sukhothai statuary with a slender body in harmonious proportions, rounded shoulders, a delicately tightened waist, and limbs with fluid contours.
The oval face, imbued with deep serenity, is distinguished by half-closed eyes, arched eyebrows, a fine and slightly aquiline nose, and lips forming a discreet smile. The elongated ears, symbols of the Buddha’s renunciation of his princely status, frame the face harmoniously.
The hair is comprised of numerous small carefully modeled spiral curls, arranged in regular rows and topped with a high stylized flame, the rasmī, characteristic of Sukhothai Buddhist iconography. This element symbolizes the Buddha’s spiritual radiance and transcendent wisdom.
The bronze surface shows a dark brown patina with warm reflections, punctuated by coppery and golden nuances on the prominent parts, notably the face, hair, hands, and legs. These chromatic variations enhance the softness of the volumes and the finesse of the modeling. The base, open beneath the sculpture, reveals the interior of the casting as well as areas of greenish oxidation.
The Sukhothai school constitutes one of the most accomplished expressions of Thai Buddhist art.
Developed from the 13th century in the Kingdom of Sukhothai, it reaches full maturity in the 14th and 15th centuries, giving rise to a Buddha iconography characterized by elegant proportions, fluid lines, and idealized features.
