Bithynia, Kios Hemidrachm Ca. 345-315 BC (No reserve price)

Bithynia, Kios. Ca. 345-315 BC. Hemidrachm (Silver, 13 mm, 2.13 g). Obv: Laureate head of Apollo right. Rev: Prow of galley left, often decorated with a star; magistrate’s name above and below. Reference: Hoover, Handbook of Coins of Northern and Central Anatolia, type 553. Kios was an important Greek port of Bithynia on the Propontis, linking the Aegean and Black Sea with inland Anatolia. During the 4th century BC it remained culturally Greek while ruled by a local Persian dynasty under Achaemenid influence. Its harbour and position on regional trade routes brought considerable prosperity, and the city issued its own coinage before entering the struggles of Alexander’s successors.
