Description from the seller
Viking Age Iron Sword - 9th–10th century AD. - Decorated
Two-edged blade with a characteristic haft and decorated grip section
For sale is an impressive Viking Age iron sword typologically dated to the 9th–10th century AD.
The sword features an overall about 86.5 cm long, double-edged iron blade with a straight, characteristic shape of Viking Age sword tradition.
The blade shows an authentically aged, heavily patinated iron surface.
Particularly interesting is the fully preserved hilt with guard, grip ferrule and pommel. The robustly executed guard forms a striking terminus between blade and grip.
Special grip design
The grip section displays an interesting decorative detail: a clearly recognizable linear ornament runs along the pommel. This linear design gives the otherwise simple grip construction a distinctive decorative element.
Typological classification
On account of the blade, guard, and pommel design, the piece is attributed to the Viking Age form spectrum of the 9th–10th centuries AD.
The form adheres to the tradition of swords from the Viking Age that were widespread in the Scandinavian region and the broader Northern European cultural sphere. Comparable shapes are known from Scandinavia, the Baltic region, and the eastern contact areas of the Viking Age.
The exact typological assignment should be understood as a comparative classification based on the preserved condition and the available photo documentation.
Condition
The sword is in very good archaeological preservation state.
The iron surface shows corrosion, age-related irregularities, and encrustations. The original form of blade, guard, grip ferrule, and pommel is still largely recognizable.
