A pair of single‑candle silver candelabra in the Biedermeier style, made from 813 silver by Mannheim silversmith Franz Hubert Doreck, dating to 1800–1850, each about 30 cm high with 11.5 cm width and depth, gross weight 661 g, in good condition with minor signs of age.
Description from the seller
A pair of single-candle candlesticks – lightars made in the Biedermeier style from 13-ruled silver by the Mannheim goldsmith Franz Hubert Doreck. He arrived in Mannheim in 1821 from Brünn, ran a goldsmith-jeweler workshop and produced high-quality silver in the Empire and Biedermeier styles.
The candlesticks have a twin form and form a pair. Both are set on a high, flaring bell-shaped foot with a square-described base. Each corner of the quadrilateral is marked by a flat, scroll-end foot crowned with an acanthus leaf palmette. The foot’s surface is divided by vertical flutings and decorated with repoussé ornament consisting of Rocaille motifs and dry-acanthus leaves.
Above, on the quadrangular depression, is placed a stout, bulbous-shaped shaft tapering slightly toward the top. Its surface is also fluted and adorned at the base with repoussé palmettes of acanthus leaves. In the crowning of the candlesticks is a vase-like sleeve. It, too, repeats the lower parts of the candlestick emphasized by the fluting.
In the sleeves are round, dish-like profili, whose edge is decorated with a continuous ornament – Ionic kimation enriched with acanthus leaves.
On the edge of the base of one candlestick there is a double signature containing the numeric mark of silver fineness 13 (812) and the name of the goldsmith written in capitals as Doreck, whereas on the other one only the silver fineness is inscribed.
Condition: very good.
The candlesticks come from my private family collection and have certificates.
