Altrömisch, Kaiserreich marble Marmorkopf, a small, youth‑like, beardless head in white marble, 16 cm overall height on a presentation plinth and dating to the 1st–2nd century CE, with original authenticity; provenance from Auktionshaus Artesia (France) in 2026, previously Mehlis (Germany) in 2024, private sale with no shipping outside the EU and no guarantee or returns.
Description from the seller
Small marble head, youthful and beardless, with a cap-like hairstyle. On the forehead, parallel, carved, combed strands, the calotte as a mass of lock-like plasticity. Eyes almond-shaped with heavy upper lid, smooth and without iris or pupil bore. Small mouth with sharply incised angles, cheeks laid flat.
These features – combed forehead hair, flat face, and bore-free eyes – are stylistically comparable with gallo-Roman heads of the 1st–2nd century AD.
Dimensions: head approx. 8 cm, total height with presentation plinth approx. 16 cm
Material: white marble
Condition: break at the neck, there a modern bore for the mounting pin. Occiput and calotte clearly weathered, with sugary-grain texture and brownish discolorations; the face better preserved – a condition of preservation that occurs with uneven ground support. Nose rubbed. No detectable restorations or overpaintings.
Provenance: Acquired at Auction House Artesia, 86100 Châtellerault; previously Auction House Mehlis, 08523 Plauen. Old collection number “8149 – 38”.
No shipping outside the EU. Private sale, no warranty or return.
