Description from the seller
An elegant 19th-century German solid silver sugar casket, dating to approximately 1860 and crafted in the Louis Philippe style. Made of 12 Loth silver (750/1000), this piece is a fine example of traditional German silversmithing from the mid-19th century.
The casket has a distinctive oval body with gently curved sides, resting on four beautifully decorated feet featuring scrollwork, palmettes and ornamental medallions. Its raised, domed lid is surmounted by an elaborate fixed handle formed from symmetrical volutes and stylised floral decorations.
The hinged lid is fitted with an integrated lock, reflecting the tradition of lockable silver sugar boxes, which were popular in European households during the 19th century. According to the accompanying certificate of authenticity, the casket retains its original key.
The interior is gilded, providing an attractive contrast to the polished silver exterior. The underside bears the hallmark "12" within an oval, indicating the German 12 Loth silver standard, equivalent to a fineness of 750/1000.
The design represents an interesting transitional form in 19th-century silverware, combining the restrained proportions of earlier Biedermeier pieces with the more elaborate ornamentation associated with the Louis Philippe period.
The casket measures 13 cm in height, 14.5 cm in width and 12 cm in depth, with a documented silver weight of 309 grams.
It is preserved in very good antique condition, with minor surface wear and signs of age consistent with its history.
The piece comes from the Bednarek family collection and is documented by a certificate of authenticity .
