Herder met schapen, an oil on panel landscape by the Dutch school, dating from 1930–1940, signed at the lower right with 'P.M.', measuring 34 × 22 cm (52 × 40 cm with frame) and sold with frame.
Description from the seller
This atmospheric and refined painting depicts an idyllic rural scene, in which a small flock of sheep grazes on a vast meadow, while a solitary figure is visible on the left. On the right are a few modest farmhouses, partially hidden behind a cluster of tall, leafy trees. The artist has created a particularly serene and nostalgic atmosphere with a harmonious palette of warm beige, ochre, brown, and olive-green tones. Notably, the large, softly lit sky occupies a significant part of the composition and gains a lively texture through fine, rhythmic brushstrokes. The subtle light accents on the sheep and the vegetation form a beautiful contrast with the dark foreground and enhance the spatial depth of the landscape. The loose, impressionistic brushwork and the balanced composition give the work a natural and timeless look. The painting breathes the calm and simplicity of traditional farm life and shapes a charming image of rural beauty and the characteristic Dutch landscape.
