Three-piece vintage brass set comprising a brass drum microscope (circa 1860–1900), 185 mm high, 45 mm wide, 150 mm deep, 210 g, tested and working, and two antique French pocket dissection microscopes, all in fair physical condition.
Description from the seller
This main item is an antique brass drum microscope (also frequently referred to as a field or naturalist microscope). The estimated age is Circa 1860–1900 (Late 19th Century).
This style of portable, compact microscope was highly popular throughout Continental Europe (especially France) and the UK during the Victorian era. It features a characteristic cylindrical "drum" or "barrel" base with a cut-out section to insert slides and a bottom mirror to catch light. The glass mirror is intact and undamaged apart from aging.
Also offered are two antique French botanical pocket dissection microscopes (often referred to as field or insect microscopes). The outer brass protective sleeves/tubes and the inner cages holding the lenses and specimen viewing areas.
These brass pocket field instruments were highly popular during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras for students, botanists, and nature enthusiasts to inspect specimens outdoors. They are both 30mm diameter x 65mm long and are dated Circa 1900 - 1920.
