Luis Pardo (1910–2000) was a Spanish painter active during the 20th century, whose production focused mainly on landscape and maritime themes. His work is characterized by loose brushwork, mastery of atmospheric light, and a special sensitivity to the chromatic effects of the sky and water. Throughout his career he developed a language close to late Impressionism, notable for balanced compositions and a vibrant treatment of color.
The composition depicts a sea sunset where the sky and sea merge in an enveloping atmosphere of warm tones. The horizon appears subtly defined, allowing the focus to fall on the light effects of the sunset. The ranges of oranges, ochres, and violets are reflected on the surface of the sea, creating a chromatic play that adds depth and dynamism to the scene.
The brushstroke, loose and expressive, builds the vibration of the water and the density of the sky through layers of oil applied with ease. The treatment of light shows a clear atmospheric intention, capturing the ephemeral moment of twilight with sensitivity and compositional balance.
Observations:
The work is in good condition of conservation appropriate to its age.
Dimensions:
100.5 x 87.8 cm unframed
73.3 x 60.2 cm (image size)
