Description from the seller
An Exceptional Quartet of Authentic Moustiers Faience – Provençal Art Ceramic Collection (20th Century)
Description
This curated lot features a highly decorative collection of four authentic tin-glazed earthenware (faïence stannifère) pieces, entirely hand-crafted and hand-painted in the historic sanctuary of French pottery — Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, Provence.
Dating from the second half of the 20th century (circa 1960–1980s), a period marked by the prestigious revival of the historic local ateliers, this ensemble showcases the two most celebrated design canons of the region: the Exotic Bird Decor (Décor aux oiseaux) and the Baroque Floral Decor (Décor aux fleurs).
Every piece bears its authentic, manganese-oxide handwritten signature on the reverse, guaranteeing its provenance and individual artisanal creation.
Lot Details and Specifications
Magnificent Large Display Platter (Grand Plat d'apparat)
Workshop: Atelier Saint-Michel (Signed on the reverse: “Atelier St Michel – Fait à Moustiers”).
Dimensions: Rare exhibition size – 36.5 cm in diameter.
Decor: A central dynamic composition depicting two mythological exotic birds surrounded by stylized Provençal flora. The rim features elegant hanging floral swags framed by the traditional Moustiers scalloped edge with a hand-painted green border. The reverse bears authentic pernette marks (kiln support scars), an absolute guarantee of traditional manual firing.
Baluster Ceramic Vase (Vase de forme balustre)
Workshop: Atelier Saint-Michel (Signed on the reverse: “Atelier St Michel”).
Decor: An exquisite grotesque style centerpiece featuring a finely detailed heron rendered in sophisticated ochre-gold and muted violet tones. The graphic precision of the plumage and the classic suspended floral garland around the neck demonstrate the highest level of painterly skill from this studio.
Classic Three-Legged Hot Chocolate Pot / Pitcher (Verseuse tripode)
Workshop: Manufacture Lallier (Signed on the reverse: “Lallier à Moustiers”).
Decor: Traditional poly-chrome Baroque floral bouquet featuring the iconic "Moustiers Rose" motif. The vessel is designed with a lateral handle and stands elegantly on three rocaille scroll feet, with delicate green scroll work accents.
Decorative Serving / Dessert Plate (Assiette décorative)
Workshop: Atelier Leosan (Signed on the reverse: “Leosan à Moustiers”, founded by maître-faïencier Léopold Santucci).
Decor: A minimalist, elegant variant of the bird decor, featuring a single crowned exotic bird standing on a green mound. The rim is tastefully understated with four isolated floral buds, creating a refined sense of space.
Condition and Authenticity Report
Authenticity: 100% original mid-to-late 20th-century artisan faience. No modern stencils or decals were used; every brushstroke is hand-painted over a raw tin enamel base.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition. The glaze retains its characteristic soft, milky luster. Free from chips, cracks, structural hairlines, or any past restorations. A remarkably well-preserved set.
This cohesive quartet serves as a ready-made, high-end interior design solution and holds strong appeal for serious collectors of regional French art pottery.
