Ancient wooden ceiling panel repurposed as a decorative wall panel, measuring 186 cm high by 42 cm wide and 3 cm deep, weighing 5 kg, made in Italy, with a central diamond medallion and Renaissance–Baroque vegetal motifs on a sage green background in natural warm tones.
Description from the seller
The artifact shown in the image is an ancient painted ceiling board, historically used in coffered wooden ceilings or in floors "alla Sansovina"; today decontextualized and exhibited as a decorative wall panel.
Below is the detailed description of the object:
Structure and Support
• Material: It is made from a solid wood beam (presumably spruce or poplar, species typically used for ceiling panels of the period).
• Composition: The board has an elongated rectangular shape and is visually divided into four adjacent square compartments, separated by thin dark vertical bands that simulate a moulding or the structural interlock of the original ceiling.
• Condition: The surface shows signs of wear, with light cracks in the wood and an attractive matte patina due to the aging of pigments and finish.
Decorative Elements and Colour
• Central motif: Each of the four panels hosts at the center a diamond-shaped medallion bordered in dark. Inside the diamond is painted a stylized flower or a geometric rosette with petals in cream, ochre, and burnt brown.
• Background motif: The surrounding space around the central diamond is richly decorated with volutes and symmetric vegetal clusters (foliage motifs of acanthus leaves or tendrils), typical of Renaissance and Italian Baroque decorative tradition.
• Color palette: The predominant colors are natural and warm. A vivid sage green background provides the field on which decorations in ochre yellow, antique gold, Siena earth, and brown are arranged.
Current Mounting System
• The panel is hung on a rough-faced stone wall using two conspicuous dark wrought-iron brackets. The brackets wrap around the board at both the bottom and the top with scroll-shaped hooks, ensuring its stability and highlighting the rustic, historic character of the installation.
