The former passionately sculpts bodies through his lens, while the latter relies on photography throughout his career; nothing seems to link the two artists. One chases perfect form, the other stubbornly captures movement in matter.
There is nothing spontaneous about Mapplethorpe’s meticulousness, while Rodin entrusts himself to the flashes of gesture, even at the expense of accidental expression. The highly controlled plans of the former echo the tormented full-rounds of the latter. The fragmentation of bodies, their compulsive inspection, the drapery that barely hides them all signal a common, also sensuous, quest. Separated by nearly a century, the two works show countless similarities and produce striking diptychs."
