Description from the seller
Chinese Blue and White Double-Gourd Vase – “Mountain Landscape and River Scene” – Transitional Style
Height: 32 cm Diameter: approx. 20 cm Condition: Very Good – minor kiln imperfections, no chips, no cracks, no restoration
Provenance: Private Portuguese Collection
An elegant and finely hand-painted blue and white porcelain double-gourd vase, depicting a continuous river and mountain landscape with pavilions, pine trees and scholars’ retreats, rendered in deep cobalt tones and surrounded by swirling mist and stylised clouds.
The painting style is inspired by the Transitional period (late Ming – early Qing), featuring fluid, expressive brushwork and strong tonal gradation of cobalt blue, achieving both serenity and dramatic movement. This vase, produced in the 19th century, beautifully continues that refined aesthetic tradition.
The double-gourd (hulu) shape symbolises longevity and good fortune, a classic auspicious motif in Chinese culture.
Condition: Very Good, with minor iron spots, pinholes, and firing imperfections typical of antique kiln production. These small natural firing marks (tiny black and brown specks visible on the surface) confirm authentic age and traditional firing technique. No chips, no cracks, no restoration. The glaze remains glossy, translucent and evenly applied, with a soft patina consistent with 19th-century porcelain.
