Rare Early Byzantine Gold Devotional Pendant with Christ Pantocrator
Circa 6th–7th Century AD
A rare and impressive Early Byzantine gold devotional pendant, of large circular form, featuring Christ Pantocrator at the centre with the Byzantine Christological inscription IC XC.
The pendant is richly decorated with 10 gemstones, comprising two pearlspositioned at the upper suspension and eight coloured gemstones, apparently rubies and emeralds, arranged around the main medallion.
A remarkable combination of Byzantine Christian iconography, gold craftsmanship and precious gemstones, reflecting the religious and social significance of high-status devotional jewellery.
