Description from the seller
Madonna with Child – European School of Religious Painting
This original work is an oil painting on canvas of considerable age from the 19th century (approx. 1860–1890), i.e. from the 1800s (over 140–160 years old).
The composition shows the Virgin Mary in a red dress with an azure mantle and a veil on her head. She holds the Infant Jesus in her arms, who presses a white flower to his chest, while in the background a landscape and a green drapery are visible. The work belongs to the tradition and execution of the European school of religious art.
Technical details and condition
The support (canvas): The painting is on a very old and rustic canvas, made of a thick and coarse weave (of the dense hemp or jute type), as was typical for handmade canvases of the 19th century.
Craquelure (age cracking): The surface of the painting shows a deep and pronounced craquelure (a fine network of natural cracks as part of the aging process), which is clear evidence of the age and authenticity of the work.
Canvas restoration: On the back of the painting, one can see the particular method by which a historic tear was repaired – the canvas was hand-sewn from the back, thread by thread with yarn, an extremely fine traditional method that makes the repair on the front completely invisible.
Signature: There is a signature on the work that cannot be precisely deciphered.
Condition of the frame: The wooden frame and the back show slight, minor signs of woodworm infestation on the reverse (in small quantities), which is typical for the age.
Stylistic origin: It belongs to the European school of religious painting (Western / academic tradition).
