Landscape is a signed European School oil painting from 1950–1960, depicting a romantic landscape and sold with a frame.
Description from the seller
European School (19th–early 20th century) – Romantic Rocky Gorge with Figure and Waterfall – Oil Painting
Atmospheric European oil painting depicting a dramatic wooded gorge, with towering rock formations, dense vegetation, a cascading stream and a solitary figure making their way along a narrow mountain path.
The composition is particularly striking for its dramatic contrasts of light and shadow. Sunlight illuminates the rocky cliffs and patches of vegetation, while the surrounding forest remains enveloped in deep greens, browns and blues.
A small figure wearing a reddish-brown coat and a light-coloured hat stands near the centre of the lower composition, holding a long staff or pole. This human presence emphasises the imposing scale of the natural surroundings.
The painting is executed with expressive, textured brushwork and considerable attention to the rendering of foliage, rocks and flowing water. Its picturesque subject and atmospheric treatment of nature are characteristic of the European Romantic landscape tradition.
A red monogram or stylised signature is visible in the lower right corner. The artist has not been identified.
The painting is presented in an attractive, substantial moulded wooden frame with a dark patinated finish and gilt detailing.
