Remarkable statue of maternity - Chokwe - Angola

Remarkable Chokwe maternity statue – Angola. This elegant ancient sculpture sensitively illustrates the universal theme of mother and child, omnipresent in traditional African art. The naturalistic rendering of the body, half-closed eyelids, finely outlined lips, and the delicate incised hairstyle reveal the hand of a particularly skilled sculptor. The superb deep brown patina, silky and glossy, bears witness to long ritual use and undeniable authenticity.

Among the Chokwe, maternity figures symbolize fertility, the continuity of lineage, and the protection of life. They could be involved in rites related to birth, motherhood, or the transmission of ancestors. Combining high-quality sculpture, a gentle expression, and an excellent traditional patina, this work constitutes a remarkable testament to the classical art of the Chokwe of Angola.
