Description from the seller
Josiah (1976): The Soul of Flamenco
Mérida Josiah, born in Barcelona in 1976, is a Spanish painter whose artistic world is deeply influenced by Iberian culture and its intense colours. After studying painting at fine arts schools in Spain, she developed an artistic practice rooted in observational drawing, sketching scenes in bars, dance halls and on the streets. She later reworks these sketches on large canvases, using broad brushes, paintbrushes and palette knives to create expressive compositions with vivid, daring colours. Her works are represented in numerous galleries in Spain and are attracting growing international interest.
In The Soul of Flamenco, Josiah depicts a dancer captured in a sweeping, theatrical movement. Seen from behind, she spreads the flowing panels of her fiery red dress, whose folds and movement occupy almost the entire composition. A red flower adorns her dark hair, while her outstretched arms emphasise the grace and energy of her pose.
The contrast between the intense red of the dress and the almost black background gives the painting remarkable visual power. Vigorous brushstrokes, thick applications of paint and shades of red, crimson and burgundy lend the fabric a strong sense of movement and texture. Lighter accents define the shoulders, arms and folds of the dress, allowing the figure to emerge from the darkness.
The artist prioritises emotion and the energy of the gesture over meticulous detail. The dance seems to continue beyond the canvas, in a composition that evokes the passion, pride and expressive power of flamenco. The work combines feminine elegance, chromatic intensity and freedom of movement.
With its large format and spectacular use of red, this painting makes a striking statement in a contemporary interior, reception space or collection devoted to dance and expressive figurative art.
