87-piece fine ceramic service by Choisy Le Roi, France, dating to circa 1850–1900, with brown transferware decoration, dimensions 60 cm high, 40 cm wide and 40 cm deep, in good condition with minor signs of age and occasional chips on a few pieces.
Description from the seller
Elegant fine-terracotta service from Choisy-le-Roi, produced by the prestigious manufactory H. Boulenger & Cie and datable precisely to the years 1880–1895, a period in which the French factory reached one of its highest quality levels. The service features a refined transferware monochrome decoration in sepia brown, typical of the late nineteenth century production: delicate flowering branches, finely shaded, alternate on the cavetta (rim) forming a balanced composition of great naturalistic taste. The edge is adorned with a continuous ornamental band, elaborated with small stylized motifs that confer harmony and visual rhythm to the whole.
On the reverse is the original HB&Cie – Service Choisy – Choisy-le-Roi mark, printed in black, which unequivocally attests to its authenticity and historical placement.
Composition:
- 40 flat plates 23.5ø (2 plates have a chip, 1 plate is chipped)
- 18 soup plates 23ø
- 12 dessert plates 21ø (1 plate has a chip)
- 5 oval service plates 40x28; 38x26 (has a small chip); 37.5x26; 34x24
- 4 small oval serving plates 25x12
- 1 gravy boat 23x16
- 1 round serving plate 26.5ø (has a chip)
- 3 cake stands 20ø h 11; 23ø h 4; 23ø h 4
- 1 salad bowl 28ø (has a chip)

Manufacture – Choisy-le-Roi
Founded in 1804 and quickly becoming one of the most important French manufactories of the 19th century, Choisy-le-Roi distinguished itself for its excellent production in fine faience and for the skilled use of transfer printing, which allowed for extremely detailed decorations. The manufactory managed to combine elegance and precision, specializing in naturalistic and floral motifs highly appreciated by the bourgeoisie of the era. During the 19th century the brand consolidated its reputation for excellence, becoming synonymous with refinement and quality, characteristics that today make its services particularly sought after by collectors.
Condition
The service is in overall excellent condition for its age. There are light signs of wear, widespread micro-cracking, and in some elements the typical darkening spots due to the natural evolution of antique earthenware. Common defects consistent with the age, which do not compromise aesthetics, legibility of the decoration, or the integrity of the pieces. Overall a well-preserved and uniform service.
