Extraordinarily well-preserved antique Chinese porcelain bowl from the late Qing Dynasty, precisely datable to the reign of Emperor Tongzhi (1861–1875).
This is a classic wedding bowl, produced in the venerable imperial workshops of Jingdezhen.
Decoration & symbolism:
The exterior is decorated in bright, finely hand-applied enamels of Famille Rose. It features intricate floral scrolls surrounding two circular medallions. In these medallions lies the famous character for “Double Happiness” (囍 - Shuangxi) in delicate iron-red paint.
The center of the inner surface is adorned with a charming circular medallion depicting a peach with green leaves – the traditional Chinese symbol for longevity (Shou) and health.
Base mark & authenticity:
On the underside sits the original four-character imperial reign mark in seal script (Zhuanshu): “同治年製”
(Tongzhi Nian Zhi – Made in the Tongzhi period).
The mark was applied in iron-red on top of the glaze as was typical for the period.
Condition & quality:
The bowl is in an absolutely exceptional, mint condition for its age. There are no cracks, hairlines, chips, or restorations. The colors and gilding are wonderfully fresh.
Of particular note is the acoustic condition: when gently tapped, the piece emits a wonderfully bright, clear, long-lasting bell-like tone, proof of the flawless structure of the high-purity kaolin porcelain.
