Auction description (Dutch)
Forse antique tin pouring jug with sneb ("Angel jug") – Meuse-Rhine region, ca. 1780–1820
A monumental and heavily cast tin pouring jug of the classic Angel jug type, originating from the Meuse-Rhine region (attributed to the Liège or Maastricht guild area).
The type derives its name from the thumb rest, in which on the inside a detailed cherub or angel head is cast in high relief. The jug has a finely pronounced belly form with a profiled stand ring, an upright conical neck and a separately attached, deep pouring sneb. The lid is provided with concentric turning rings and closes on a sturdy multipiece hinge.
On the underside of the bottom is an authentic caster's mark with crowned motif (partly worn by historic use).
Specifications:
Height: 28 cm
Weight: 1,553 grams
Dating: ca. 1780 – 1820
Condition:
In a beautiful, authentic state with a fine, unpolished patina. The jug shows light, characteristic signs of use consistent with age (a few superficial dings and scratches). As is often the case with heavy pouring jugs of this size, the lid hinge has historically been skilfully reinforced/soldered with tin. Solid construction and well-sealing lid. See photos for an accurate depiction of the condition.
