Description from the seller
Pair of sculptures, "Solomonic columns", carved wood, gilded and polychromed, 18th century – Spain
Material: Carved wood, gilded and polychromed
Period: 18th century
Country of origin: Spain
Good condition considering age and use
Dimensions: 100 x 18 x 18 cm.
Magnificent pair of Solomonic columns belonging to the decorative structure of a Baroque altarpiece from the eighteenth century. These pieces, in origin, would be attached to the altarpiece structure; therefore their ornamentation concentrates on the visible face; on the back face the wood is carved but bare, without gold and barely polychromed.
The Solomonic columns twist on their own axis with a serpentine form. Their entire surface is decorated with gilded vegetal motifs on a red background and the helical tread in a deep green. It is topped by an intricate Corinthian capital, full of delicate acanthus leaves that curve outward. Notable is the quality of the gilding technique with gold leaf.
The Solomonic columns are a type of architectural column characterized by their helical shape, like a screw, and that is decorated with vegetal motifs. This architectural style originated in the 16th century in Italy and became popular in the 17th and 18th centuries in Europe and Latin America.
