Mark Spitz is a former American swimmer and one of the most successful athletes in the history of swimming.
He was born on February 10, 1950 in Modesto, California, and was regarded early on as an extraordinary talent. He gained international fame at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, where he won two gold medals in the relay.
However, his legendary status was achieved at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich: there he won seven gold medals and set a new world record in each event — an unprecedented achievement.
Spitz dominated the competitions in the 100 and 200 meter freestyle as well as the 100 and 200 meter butterfly and was also part of the victorious U.S. relay teams.
After these Games he retired at the age of only 22.
It wasn't until 2008 that his record of seven gold medals at a single Olympics was surpassed by Michael Phelps. Mark Spitz remains an icon of swimming and helped shape an entire generation of athletes with his performances.
