Rated Excellent on Trustpilot.
Union Modellbahn in N scale featuring ET 403 of the Lufthansa Airport Express, powered by DC with analog control, in nearly new condition with original packaging and one item in the lot.
Description from the seller
Offered for sale due to collection clearance, a ET 403 train in N gauge. (NOT for layout use)
DESCRIPTION
The Modelleisenbahn Union N gauge ET 403 models feature a 5-pole motor with flywheels in an end car, white-red light change (individually switchable in digital operation), Next18 digital interface in all vehicles, interior lighting with digital interfaces, metal pantographs without electrical function, numerous attached details (partly metal) with prototypical lettering as well as various interior fittings, NEM coupling mounts and Scharfenberg couplings in different lengths. Additionally, a standard N coupling can be mounted at the front in place of the pantograph coupling and a cover for the pantograph coupling can be attached.
The length is 16.9 cm for the end cars and 16.7 cm for the middle cars. The train is standardly equipped with short couplings for which we recommend a minimum radius of 250 mm. With the included longer couplings the train is also suitable for R1 192 mm. There are also couplings included for operation as a double traction.
Prototype:
The ET 403 electric multiple unit is today regarded as a precursor of the current ICEs. The order for construction was placed on May 24, 1970, and the first unit was handed over on March 2, 1973. From the winter timetable 1974/75 the trains were used in the then 1st class IC service and operated mainly on the Bremen–Munich route. In total, 3 four-part units were produced. After the introduction of 2nd class in IC operation, the trains could no longer be used as flexibly. Starting in 1982, they found a new deployment as Lufthansa Airport Express (LAX). The trains were used by Düsseldorf via Cologne to Frankfurt, replacing domestic flights on these routes. The trains operated as LAX until 1993. They were withdrawn due to detected corrosion damage. Currently, one set is being refurbished.
The trains had a cruising speed of 200 km/h and a documented maximum speed of 225 km/h. As with today’s ICE3 and ICE4, the drive was distributed under the entire train; configurations could range from 3- to 5-part, with double traction also possible. A middle car was built as a half-d restaurant car.
