AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Offered for sale due to collection purge, a N gauge ET 403 train set. (NO layout use)

DESCRIPTION

The Modellbahn Union N gauge ET 403 models feature a 5-pole motor with flywheels in an end car, white-red headlight change (individually switchable in digital operation), Next18 digital interface in all vehicles, interior lighting with digital interfaces, metal pantographs without electrical function, numerous added details (partly metal) with prototypical lettering as well as various interior fittings, NEM coupling mounts and Scharfenberg couplings in different lengths. Additionally, a standard N coupling can be mounted at the front in place of the dummy coupling and a cover for the dummy coupling can be attached.

The length is 16.9 cm for the end cars and 16.7 cm for the middle cars. The train is equipped by default with short couplings for which we recommend a minimum radius of 250 mm. With the included longer couplings the train is also suitable for R1 192 mm. Couplings for operation as a double traction are also included.

Prototype:

The ET 403 electric multiple unit is today regarded as the precursor of the current ICEs. The order for construction was issued on 24 May 1970, the first unit was handed over on 2 March 1973. From the winter timetable 1974/75 the trains were operated in the then still single-class IC service and mainly ran on the Bremen-Munich route. In total, 3 four-part units were produced. After the introduction of the second class in IC service, the trains could not be used as flexibly. A new deployment area emerged from 1982 with the Lufthansa Airport Express (LAX). The trains were operated from Düsseldorf via Cologne to Frankfurt, thus replacing domestic flights on these routes. The trains were in service as LAX until 1993. Retirement occurred due to detected corrosion damage. Currently one unit is undergoing restoration.

The trains had a cruising speed of 200 km/h and a documented maximum speed of 225 km/h. As with today’s ICE3 and ICE4, the drive was distributed under the entire train; the composition could vary from 3- to 5-part, and double traction was possible. A middle car is built as a half-dining car.
